I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in. ~ John Muir, 1913

Funks Grove Stewardship Group Work Days

Don Schmidt leads a faithful group of volunteers in a variety of stewardship activities every other Saturday throughout the year. Stewards are welcome to join the group on a regular basis or stop out on occasion to assist with projects. Projects include exotic species removal, prairie seed collection, tree planting, and other management projects.

Funks Grove Stewardship Work Days provide an excellent opportunity to meet others who believe in the importance of being stewards of the environment. They provide a great volunteer opportunity for Master Naturalists needing to fulfill volunteer requirements. Individuals and families are also encouraged to participate!

The Funks Grove Stewardship Group was established in 1992 and continues to thrive! Volunteers work at their own pace and no experience is necessary. Work days include learning about Illinois’ natural history first-hand, while spending a nice morning with friends who share a vision of the value of this spectacular natural area.

At 1,200 acres, Funks Grove is the largest remaining intact prairie grove in the state of Illinois. Much of this high quality natural area is protected as registered Illinois Land & Water Reserve or dedicated Illinois Nature Preserve and portions have been designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of Interior.

The group meets at the Sugar Grove Nature Center located in the southern end of Funks Grove. We meet at 9:00 a.m. September through May and at 8:00 a.m. June through August. Work Days typically last two hours. Registration is not required for individuals. Groups interested in helping must call the Nature Center at least one week prior to the workday to determine whether the planned activity is suitable for group participation. Please call or email us at 309.874.2174 or info@sugargrovenaturecenter.org.

Dress for the weather and working outdoors; we suggest blue jeans, heavy shoes, a long-sleeved shirt, and gloves---you’ll look like one of the regulars.
